About Empathos
Thoughtful media and community work telling the rest of the American story.
Why Empathos Exists
Telling the Rest of the American Story
A fuller account of American life
Empathos Media creates thoughtful, fact-based stories and community experiences that explore the fullness of American life, including the truths that inspire us and the truths that challenge us.
We look at the histories, systems, choices, and relationships that shape American life. The purpose is not to offer easy comfort. It is to help people understand more fully, imagine more honestly, and act with greater responsibility toward one another.
Women-centered, never closed
Empathos centers women's voices because those voices have too often been minimized or left out. The work is women-centered, not women-exclusive, and welcomes men who are willing to listen, learn, and participate with respect.

Born from lived experience
Lutricia "Pat" Callair, Founder
“It is a fine skill I am attempting here: the ability to be angry and empathetic, compassionate and a truth teller.”
Lutricia began her activist career when she was 14 years old as a member of the Roy Wilkins Youth Council of the NAACP. She was trained in Non-Violent Civil Disobedience (Satygraha). She and the members of her Youth Council after weeks of non-violent protest were successful in integrating all of the public facilities in her hometown of Spartanburg South Carolina.
As part of her activist experience, she was introduced to the concept of the Beloved Community, which proposes that we have the capacity to come together and see ourselves in each other. We can interrupt racism and other forms of oppressions. And we can create healthy families, communities, and a healthy society
She has created Empathos Media Group. It produces the podcast BEI, (Bigotry, Exclusion and Ignorance) and Hear and Now conversations, an online platform that invites people to share ideas and information about the prevailing issues of the day. She facilitates Kinship Circles that promote respectful and caring interactions among those from different races and life experience. Lutricia’s book which addresses her insights as a Black woman, Civil Rights activist and a therapist is due for publication winter 2027.
What We Believe
A fuller story asks more of all of us
- 1
Human difference should be honored and affirmed, not flattened or feared.
- 2
Every person has the right to name and give meaning to their own experience.
- 3
The personal is political: private experience is shaped by public systems and shared history.
- 4
Power is not zero-sum. It can be shared, expanded, and used to build a more just community.
- 5
Indigenous voices and people historically pushed to the margins deserve attentive listening and meaningful influence.
- 6
Compassion, empathy, kindness, and respect are democratic strengths, not signs of weakness.
- 7
Beloved Community is built through truth, repair, participation, and responsibility to one another.
Our Shared Practice
Courage Without Contempt
Courage Without Contempt is our promise to tell difficult truths, name injustice, and challenge harmful ideas without denying anyone's humanity.
The goal is not agreement at any cost. It is understanding deep enough to make accountability, repair, and connection possible.
